About M

y Work

For me, painting is life-affirming.  The journey begins with a mark, and gradually—by engaging with it—a composition gains momentum.  I respond to every stage, moving through periods that might be pleasing, chaotic, ugly, or precious… searching for a resolution that manifests time and struggle while also offering hope through an intricate beauty.

Flowers are among my favorite iconography for their grace, boldness, and ephemerality.  A garden is a wonderland: a world with stories of birth and death, interdependence, and constant change.  Amid their blooms, I brush, sand, drip, and scrape paint—defining forms, veiling them, and bringing them back transformed.

About Me

I have an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of California, Los Angeles and a BA in Religious Studies, Art History, and Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania.  My work has been included in gallery and museum exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York, Washington, DC, Boston, Providence, and Philadelphia—as well as internationally, in Singapore.  I am grateful to have a number of pieces in private collections: in the United States, France, Singapore, and Brazil.

In addition to my studio practice, I currently teach Art in DC and Art Collecting at Montgomery College.  One of my goals in these courses is to give students access to art and people in the art world through field trips and firsthand meetings with art professionals.  From 2016 to 2020, I was a regular contributor to the magazine DC Modern Luxury, writing about local art exhibitions and news.  Previously, I taught at Los Angeles museums including LACMA, the Hammer Museum, The Broad, and The Getty Center, engaging visitors with a wide range of artworks through interactive courses and tours.
